{"id":333,"date":"2012-04-16T13:57:49","date_gmt":"2012-04-16T17:57:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/?p=333"},"modified":"2012-04-16T21:32:06","modified_gmt":"2012-04-17T01:32:06","slug":"on-the-road-to-rainier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/?p=333","title":{"rendered":"On The Road To Rainier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every year, the Oxford Gallery in Rochester, NY has an invitational show.\u00a0 The theme is usually pretty generic, like &#8220;Nocturne&#8221; or &#8220;Tradition&#8221;.\u00a0 It allows for a lot of artistic interpretation, while still maintaining a level of consistency.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s theme is &#8220;Palimpsest&#8221;, which ought to invite a little more variation than usual.\u00a0 Traditionally, a palimpsest s a manuscript page from a scroll or book from which the text has been scraped off and which can be used again.\u00a0 It is an image in which another, and presumably earlier image shows through; an image which contains evidence of its own history.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-334 alignright\" title=\"S12_On_the_Road_to_Rainer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/S12_On_the_Road_to_Rainer_copy_resized-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/S12_On_the_Road_to_Rainer_copy_resized-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/S12_On_the_Road_to_Rainer_copy_resized.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since this is a more abstract idea, I really wracked my brain to come up with something.\u00a0 I could work with the theme figuratively or literally.\u00a0 The possibilities were endless.<\/p>\n<p>I settled on a landscape &#8211; which is very uncharacteristic of me.\u00a0 But it gave me a chance to work out some ideas I&#8217;ve had about drawing on old maps and pages of books.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve noticed quite a few artists working this way lately.\u00a0 One of my favorites is <a href=\"http:\/\/paulaswisher.com\/studio.php\" target=\"_blank\">Paula Swisher<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My piece is titled &#8220;On The Road To Rainier&#8221;.\u00a0 My husband and I took a road trip out west to celebrate our honeymoon a few years ago.\u00a0 One of my best memories was walking through the alpine meadows around Mt. Rainier.\u00a0 I worked from a number of photos we took to get my final image.\u00a0 If you look closely, you might be able to see Mt. Rainier on the map towards the upper right hand corner.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little easier to see &#8220;Washington&#8221; in the lower left hand corner.<\/p>\n<p>I dropped my painting off on Saturday, and found that it was one of the smallest pieces there (11 x 14&#8243; including the frame).\u00a0 The show opens to the public Saturday April 21st and runs through Saturday June 2nd.\u00a0 The opening reception for this show is Saturday May 5th 5:30-8:30 pm.
