{"id":206,"date":"2011-02-25T22:42:21","date_gmt":"2011-02-26T03:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/?p=206"},"modified":"2011-02-25T22:42:21","modified_gmt":"2011-02-26T03:42:21","slug":"imprimatura-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/?p=206","title":{"rendered":"Imprimatura II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Traditions_imprimatura_21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-209\" title=\"&quot;Traditions&quot; painting imprimatura\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Traditions_imprimatura_21-235x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Traditions_imprimatura_21-235x300.jpg 235w, http:\/\/www.sarahmorganart.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Traditions_imprimatura_21.jpg 804w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/a>Today was a beautiful snowy day.\u00a0 I was able to spend a few hours painting this morning before going out for some cross-country skiing with my husband.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For the <span><span>underpainting<\/span><\/span> of this piece, I&#8217;m trying to keep the colors bright.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a technique I learned from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tombuechner.com\/\">Tom <span><span>Buechner<\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 The only real difference, I think, is that he often worked on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.multimediaartboard.com\/Product_Information.html\">Multimedia Art Board<\/a>.\u00a0 That surface is very <span>absorbent<\/span>, and the <span><span>underpainting<\/span><\/span> not only adds color, it also seals the surface.\u00a0 I am working on canvas this time, which doesn&#8217;t need additional sealing.\u00a0 But I really like the way the transparent color looks &#8211; a lot like a watercolor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you look closely, you can see that shadows on the right side of the painting are very blue, while the shadows on the left side are more gray.\u00a0 That is because I&#8217;m working with two different light sources &#8211; natural light on the right, which is cool, and <span>incandescent<\/span> light on the left, which is warm.\u00a0 I like how the different colors of the two lights add variation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span>I heightened the colors a little bit, and I&#8217;ll probably tone them down with subsequent layers of paint.\u00a0 Oil paint is generally transparent, so some of the <span>underpainting<\/span> will show through, giving the painting more vibrancy.\u00a0 I will likely lighten up the background a lot.\u00a0 Painting a light color over a dark color gives a cooling effect, and really makes the background sit back. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today was a beautiful snowy day.\u00a0 I was able to spend a few hours painting this morning before going out for some cross-country skiing with my husband.
